At SOBO Sweet Stuff Cakes, I am committed to participating in the Dorset Sustainable Palm Oil Community initiative.

By 31st December 2024, I will have worked with my suppliers to ensure that where palm oil is present in any products I use, that it will be sourced from sustainable sources. This process is facilitated through annual supplier audits. By doing so, I know that I will be helping to support livelihoods, fight climate change and protect wildlife around the world from the impact of unsustainable agricultural practices.

Background:

Palm oil production is traditionally associated with deforestation and the consequent impact on biodiversity, climate change and other negative environmental impacts.

However, sustainable palm oil is produced in a manner which minimises environmental impact and meets strict criteria throughout the production process.

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is the major international stakeholder body which defines these criteria. They include:

· no deforestation of high carbon stock (HCS) or high conservation value (HCV) forests and ecosystems

· no development of peatland

· zero burning

· responsible labour practices and respect of the rights of local communities

I am committed to aim for sourcing 100% traceable physical certified sustainable palm oil by the end of 2024. This will be audited annually. Look out on my social media for ongoing updates.

The Steps I Will Take:

Step 1 – I have been through my current ingredients list already and I am already using sustainable palm oil in all of these.

Step 2 – By end 2024, I will be creating some new cake menu options. I will:

· Ensure only sustainable palm oil is used for these new menu options

· Check through ingredients used in all of my cleaning products and make any necessary adjustments

Step 3 –

· Send a survey to my suppliers to identify what type of palm oil (conventional or sustainable) is used in their ingredients and find out what their commitment is to supplying palm oil that is 100% sustainably sourced. This will help me to decide which suppliers I continue to use and what items I can add to new menus.
